Together with allies, many LGBTQ+ people are fighting to exercise their rights and achieve full equality. However, this struggle has been undermined by a lack of specific, quantifiable information on the challenges they face.\u003C/em>\u003C/p>\u003Cp name=\"9576\" id=\"9576\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">\u003Cem class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">When collected and managed responsibly, data about sexual and gender minorities can be used to protect and empower LGBTQ+ people through informed policy and advocacy work. To this end, this Selected Reading investigates what data is (and is not) collected about LGBTQ+ individuals in the areas within healthcare, education, economics, and public policy and the ramifications of these outcomes. It offers a perspective on some of the existing gaps regarding LGBTQ+ data collection. It also examines the various challenges that LGBTQ+ groups have had to overcome through a data lens. While activism and advocacy has increased the visibility and acceptance of sexual and gender minorities and allowed them to better exercise their rights in society, significant inequities remain. Our literature review puts forward some of these recent efforts.\u003C/em>\u003C/p>\u003Cp name=\"77dd\" id=\"77dd\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">\u003Cem class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Most of the papers included in this review, however, conclude with similar findings: data for about LGBTQ+ communities is still lacking and as a result, research on the topic is often times also lagging behind. This is particularly problematic, as detailed in some of our readings, because LGBTQ+ populations are often at the center of discrimination and still face \u003C/em>\u003Ca href=\"https://cns.utexas.edu/news/how-to-best-support-lgtbq-youth-according-to-science\" data-href=\"https://cns.utexas.edu/news/how-to-best-support-lgtbq-youth-according-to-science\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u003Cem class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">disparate health vulnerabilities\u003C/em>\u003C/a>\u003Cem class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">. He co-directs ANZSOG’s Deputies Leadership Program with Kathryn Anderson, that integrates a significant focus on the evolution of leadership responses to the opportunities and risks of digital, data and AI capabilities and platforms.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>From 2001 to 2013, Martin led the Asia-Pacific public sector consulting and innovation team in Cisco’s Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG). He led strategy and design work on digital transformation and public policy and public sector reform projects in government, education, health, human services and urbanisation in India, China, South-East Asia, Australia and New Zealand.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Prior to his role in Cisco, Martin held various policy and management roles in the federal public sector, including Chief of Staff to a Minister in the Federal Government, a federal public servant (Communications, Sport, Recreation and Tourism) and as a research and strategy lead in the Office of Strategic Planning in the NSW Cabinet Office. For the past three years, and again in 2026, he has been a Learning Guide and facilities for the NSW Leadership Academy (Band 1 and Band 2 senior executives).\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>He chaired the former NSW Digital Government Advisory Panel and the Expert Advisory Group for the Welfare Payments Infrastructure Transformation program (WPIT) for the former federal Department of Human Services (now Services Australia).\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>He was a member of the Government 2.0 Task Force established by Federal Minister for Finance, Lindsay Tanner, in 2009. In 2017, Martin was one of 3 members of a review for the NSW Government, chaired by former NSW Premier Nick Greiner AC, of regulatory policy and strategy across the State.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>He was an inaugural member of the NSW AI Advisory Group which crafted the early versions of what has now become the NSW AI Assurance Framework which is also being adapted as a national AI assurance framework.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Martin writes and speaks extensively on government, service design, digital transformation, the impact of AI in government and on public leadership for the digital age as well as on different dimensions of policy reform.
